The Arizona COVID-19 Genomics Union (ACGU) is a newly formed research union comprised of researcher from The University of Arizona, Norther Arizona University and the Translational Genomics Research Institute. The singular goal of the ACGU is to study the new SARS-CoV-2 virus by understanding how it may be evolving, how it is transmitted, and how it is moving through the general population. They believe that this molecular epidemiological approach combines traditional epidemiology methods with evolutionary modeling based upon high-resolution analysis of the virus’ genome. Researchers at the ACGU plan to begin sequencing samples from COVID-19 patients to analyze the virus’ genetic codes, track its different strains, show where each sample originates from, where it may have been transmitted, and — possibly — reveal details that could provide critical information for diagnostics, anti-viral drug targets, and vaccine development.
